New Patient Information

Your first visit to Smile Design Orthodontics will give you the opportunity to discuss your concerns and problems with our Orthodontist. It will consist of a preliminary evaluation and a discussion regarding treatment, if it is necessary. Diagnostic records including x-rays, photos and impressions may also be taken to determine the complexity of the problem. These also help us to draw up a treatment plan for you. The aim is for you to leave understanding the presenting problems, the options for their correction, likely costs involved and appointments required to begin treatment. Often patients will organise appointments for the commencement of treatment at this initial visit to the surgery.

The appropriate age for commencement of orthodontic treatment is different for everyone, depending on individual timing of referral, particular problem to be corrected and stage of dental development. There are some orthodontic problems that indicate early orthodontic treatment during the mixed dentition stage when both deciduous (baby) teeth and permanent (adult) teeth are present. Early or interceptive treatment, typically from 7 to 10 years of age, can be necessary to prevent damage to permanent teeth due to bite interference, maintain and provide space for eruption of permanent teeth, guide more favourable jaw growth or most importantly, correct the width of the upper jaw that could be adversely affecting the position of the lower jaw. Following interceptive treatment, it is generally anticipated that comprehensive orthodontic treatment could also be necessary when all permanent teeth have erupted.

Early orthodontic treatment duration is usually minimal and treatment indications generally functional rather than cosmetic, although a healthy, beautiful smile with straight teeth will boost confidence and self-esteem. Benefits include:

  • Bite correction
  • Improved oral function, particularly chewing, swallowing and speech
  • Jaw growth modification and guidance
  • Co-ordination of upper and lower jaw widths
  • Decreased risk of wear affecting permanent teeth
  • Correction of protruded upper incisors to reduce the risk of trauma
  • Reduced incidence of impacted permanent teeth
  • Improved oral hygiene
  • Increased confidence, self-esteem
  • Simplify or reduce treatment time for later comprehensive orthodontic treatment
  • Reduce indications for jaw surgery

These early treatment benefits will help maintain healthy teeth and a beautiful smile for a lifetime.

New Patient Info

Orthodontic movement of teeth is possible at any age and although treatment methods are different compared to growing patients, there are orthodontic treatment options that we provide at Smile Design Orthodontics to ensure an optimal functional occlusion and beautiful smile can be achievable for everyone.

Adult orthodontic treatment has never been more popular for a variety of reasons. For many adults, earlier treatment was not an option even when strongly indicated. However, our treatment options at Smile Design Orthodontics offer the most comfortable and inconspicuous braces available, or invisible lingual braces on the lingual (inside) surface of teeth, as well as the treatment alternative using Invisalign clear aligners, making orthodontic treatment a very acceptable incentive for our mature patients.

Cosmetic considerations are strong motivation to pursue orthodontic treatment at any age and functional concerns are also a strong indication for orthodontic treatment at all ages. However, common orthodontic treatment indications more specific for adults include management of worn teeth, jaw joint dysfunction, missing teeth, gum disease and bite discrepancies.

At Smile Design Orthodontics we have extensive experience liaising with professional colleagues and academic support to ensure that we can offer the best possible treatment to resolve the most complex or routine orthodontic problems. We have the appliances, techniques, resources and motivation to cater for your comprehensive orthodontic treatment requirements.

New Patient Info

Adolescence is readily accepted as a suitable time for orthodontic treatment, particularly when most or all deciduous (baby) teeth have exfoliated, growth increments can assist some treatments and wearing appliances is socially acceptable. Orthodontic treatment has become increasingly prevalent for many reasons beyond the obvious esthetic benefits, including bite problems, jaw joint symptoms, speech pathology, breathing problems and sleep disorders.

Braces remain the most common treatment modality, although at Smile Design Orthodontics we also use Invisalign and a range of high-tech braces including Harmony lingual braces (on the inside surface of teeth) and Damon self-ligating braces. Our patients also have the option of clear or tooth coloured braces which have become very popular. These inconspicuous, more comfortable treatment options have eliminated the stigma associated with other braces and treatment methods.

With all these treatment options available, at Smile Design Orthodontics we can offer our patients the most effective and efficient treatment to minimise treatment duration and customise treatment to resolve individual problems.
